Bumpplay
This project was about the development of an interactive material sample. A base material was used, 3D knitted spacer fabric, and manipulated using the aimed material transition of compression and expansion. The material was then technoligically enhanced by implementing a capactive touch sensing layer and actuation by servo motors. During this process I reflected on the process of creating an interactive material and the insights gained from testing with the finalized material.

BUMPPLAY
Product experience is multisensory
Interaction with an artifact can on one hand transform how we perceive the world, on the other hand it can translate how we are able to act in the world.
It is interesting to know which sensory modality plays a leading role in a particular experience, so that I as a designer could concentrate on the creation on the most relevant product properties.

The design
Several servo motors were used on the inside of the model. The frame was made out of MDF wood and covered up with the spacer fabric material. Every motor controlled two bumps, rotating clockwise to control one bump and counterclockwise to turn another. Conductive thread was added to the bumps to function as sensors.
